Introduction to Hemorrhoid Surgery

Hemorrhoids, also called piles, are swollen veins around the anus and lower rectum. They may be inside the anus (internal hemorrhoids) or outside the anus (external hemorrhoids). Often hemorrhoids do not cause problems, but if your hemorrhoids bleed a lot or become swollen, hard, and painful, surgery can remove them. Hemorrhoid Surgery in Las Vegas focuses on the removal of these piles to help create more comfort in bowel movements and day-to-day lifestyle. If you are someone who faces this challenge, please consider scheduling a consultation at Las Vegas Surgical Associates, with one of our award-winning surgeons.

What is Hemorrhoid surgery?

A Hemorrhoid Surgery, medically known as a Hemorrhoidectomy, is a surgical procedure to extract hemorrhoids or piles. Hemorrhoids are enlarged blood vessels around the anus and rectum that can cause discomfort and sometimes, bleeding. Usually, they are harmless and do not require an invasive procedure but, in some cases, hemorrhoidectomy might be the best option for patients in increased distress and with a chronic condition.

What’s The First Step?

Hemorrhoid Consultation

The first step in getting Hemorrhoid Surgery in Las Vegas is scheduling a consultation with one of our expert surgeons who deals with this area of specialty. Your surgeon will discuss your medical condition, history of surgeries as well as any pre-existing health issues that might intervene in the process of surgery and recovery. He will then examine you to discuss the best techniques for your surgery.

At the end of the consultation, your surgeon will give you a surgical plan which you can then take to our patient coordinator to price out, schedule your surgery as well as give you any pre-operative instructions such as when to stop eating and drinking or having a clean anal canal before the procedure.

What to Expect on the day of Hemorrhoid Surgery

On the day of your Hemorrhoid Surgery at Las Vegas Surgical Associates, your surgeon, and their medical staff will welcome you and get you settled in the procedure room, going over your surgical plan with you in case of any last-minute questions and/or concerns. You will then be administered anesthesia by the anesthetics to keep you pain-free during the entirety of the procedure.

Your surgeon will then extract your hemorrhoids and seal back the blood vessels with dissolvable stitches in the case of a closed hemorrhoidectomy, or leave them open, called an open hemorrhoidectomy, in the case of a complicated location or size of the hemorrhoid.

Some surgeons will use electrothermal energy, which is believed to speed up recovery, to create incisions as well as to seal the tissues and blood vessels.

On average, Hemorrhoid Surgery takes up to an hour if there are no complications.

Hemorrhoid Surgery Recovery

A Hemorrhoid Surgery doesn’t take long but recovery is a slow process requiring attention and patience. The level of pain varies from patient to patient. The average recovery time is two to four weeks. Most people say the pain is gone after two weeks. We recommend that patients avoid any strenuous exercise for six to eight weeks.

You might have a longer recovery if you have complications, like infection or excessive bleeding. Your surgeon will discharge you with wound care instructions in this case; it is essential that you follow them for optimum recovery.

How much does it cost?

Hemorrhoid Surgery Cost and Insurance Information

The cost of Hemorrhoid surgery in Las Vegas will depend on various factors including the complexity of your case, your surgeon’s fees, and the anesthetist’s fees. The most efficient way to arrive at a cost is to schedule a consultation with one of our providers who can give you a surgical plan that can then be priced out.

Most medical insurance policies will cover surgery for symptomatic hemorrhoids, but we encourage you to check in with your insurer first. While you will have more information to provide your insurance company after your consultation, it’s always a good idea to come in with as much information as possible so that there are no surprises.
