What is Anorectal Disease?

Anorectal disease refers to a variety of conditions that affect the anus and rectum that can arise from chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, or strain during bowel movements. Symptoms often include pain, bleeding, and discomfort, which can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.

The more common conditions associated with anorectal disease are:

  • Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids can be located inside or in the area surrounding the anus and develop when the rectal tissue becomes swollen and inflamed. Depending on the severity of your condition, hemorrhoids can be treated in several ways, including topical medications, banding, or injections. Surgical intervention is reserved for only severe cases.
  • Anal Fissures: Small tearing can occur in the lining of the anus that is caused by more aggressive bowel movements, such as diarrhea. While surface fissures can heal on their own, deeper fissures require a discussion with a medical professional. Anal fissures can be treated with topical ointment, a warm water bath (sitz bath), and sometimes, just a high-fiber diet. When you come into LVSA, our specialists can help you find the best solution for you.
  • Anal Warts: Medically referred to as Condyloma, anal warts are the result of HPV (human papillomavirus) and form around the anus. While many people do not experience severe complications – itching, bleeding, or moisture are some common side effects. Anal warts can be treated with ointments, cauterization, or a special acid, often requiring several treatment combinations.
  • Anorectal Abscess: Anorectal abscesses occur when the anal gland becomes infected, which occurs around the rectum, and becomes filled with pus. Patients who are suffering from an abscess experience pain, swelling, skin irritation, and fever. Anorectal abscesses are normally treated in our office using a local anesthetic for a more comfortable experience, after which the surgeon will make an incision near the anus to drain the pus. More severe, deeper abscesses may require more invasive surgery.
  • Anal Fistula: Almost half of all abscesses will eventually develop into a fistula if the recently drained abscess doesn’t properly heal. While typically not painful, patients experiencing anal fistulas can expect swelling, skin irritation, pus, fecal material drainage, and sometimes even a fever. In order to treat a fistula, the surgeon needs to make a small incision in the anal sphincter muscle, which opens up the passage between the anal gland and the skin.

What’s The First Step?

 Anorectal Disease Consultation

The first step to getting anorectal disease treatment with one of our medical specialists at Las Vegas Surgical Associates is to schedule that consultation. During this initial appointment, your personal provider will evaluate your symptoms, review your medical history, and discuss potential treatment options tailored to your specific condition.

Depending on your condition and what your provider determines to be the best solution, you may be required to take certain tests, such as a CT scan, an MRI, an ultrasound, and blood tests. We will happily work with you to ensure we have everything needed to provide you with safe and successful results.

This consultation is crucial as it allows your provider to develop a personalized treatment plan and answer any questions you may have about the procedure, recovery, and expected outcomes.

What to Expect on the Day of an Anorectal Disease Treatment

Colon surgery needs to be done on a clean and empty colon. You will be put on a special diet before surgery and may need to use laxative drinks and enemas to get all of the stool out of your colon. The preparation of the bowel for surgery is very similar to what is used before a colonoscopy

On the day of colon cancer surgery, you will meet with your surgeon one more time to review the procedure. Our on-site Anesthesiologist will then meet with you and administer your anesthesia. You may also have a catheter (Foley catheter) placed in your bladder to collect urine, and a naso-gastric (NG) tube passed through your nose, down your throat, and into your stomach to remove secretions that may cause nausea and vomiting. The NG tube is usually removed before you wake up.

Once the surgery is over, you will be taken to the recovery room. You will stay in recovery anywhere from one to two hours. Then, you will be transferred to your room once you’re in stable condition.

Anorectal Disease Treatment Recovery

Recovery from anorectal disease treatment typically involves a few days of rest and limited physical activity to allow the area to heal properly. Patients may experience some discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medications and sitz baths. Follow-up appointments with your Las Vegas Surgical Associates surgeon will ensure proper healing and address any concerns.
